Lubbock Prairie Dogs, May 1997

Call us crazy... but after seeing the Texas Highways article on prairie dogs, we just had to go see some of them. So, we hopped into Delores del Sol and trekked out west to Lubbock.

They are entertaining little varmints. They are extremely social, and chatter and squeal to warn the rest of their colony about impending danger (such as two insane women with cameras), or a swooping hawk. They will run into their neighbor's burrow if danger seems imminent.

Prairie Dogs aren't really the most photogenic of critters, so here are just a few shots of them cavorting in a colony in some large park in Lubbock, Texas.
