STS-74 - NASA Tour

November 10th, 1995, Friday

First up on the tour was the Vehicle Assembly Building (VAB). It's tall enough (525 feet), with the biggest garage doors on the planet, to roll out the shuttle connected to its fuel tanks, standing on its launch platform. There are some mind-boggling statistics they quote you on this building, that for example a full-sized bus could fit inside one of the American Flag stripes that are painted on the building, to give you some sort of perspective on how big is BIG!!!!!

The launch platform, or "crawler", is also overwhelmingly huge. Each metal tread is over one ton. Notice in the photograph the lifesize but quite tiny guy standing by one set of treads, and you get some perspective on the size. The road bed it travels down is made of river rocks, brought in from Tennessee or somewhere like that.

Astronaut M. E. Webber rode on our tour bus into the facility. It's a rather long drive to the launchpads. We first drove out to the three-mile-long landing strip used for the shuttle's touchdown. A landing out there must be a pretty incredible sight!

The road out to the launchpad goes past a gigantic eagles' nest, and is surrounded on both sides by ditches that usually have a few alligators lazily swimming around. At least they were on our first visit here, but this time the alligators were no where to be found. But the eagles were there, in their nest.
