Our Bikes

Nate I acquired a 1981 Kawasaki 440 LTD Motorcycle back in 1981 (doh!) and have owned it ever since. I'd get on a kick to ride it and get it fixed up and ride for a month or two then store it back in the shed. I hadn't pulled the beast out in years when I found out that Dawn always wanted to learn to ride a motorcycle.

So for her birthday in 2005 I surprised her with a Build-a-Bear in Harley attire with a recording that told her to get ready to ride, and admission to a Riders Edge class sponsored by American Eagle Harley-Davidson of Corinth, Texas.

And there she is... enrolled in the class in the summer of 2005. For a week, I spent every evening at the Harley Dealership. That weekend of her class final, I spent most of the Saturday there as well... and before I knew it, I was sitting with Rod Dean (best salesman in the world) writing out a check for a beautiful 2005 Sportster (in silver). Thanks to Annette for bringing her camera and taking photos on "delivery day"!

I have to confess I was a bit chicken, and that first ride home on the Harley was made by Ronney, not me. I just couldn't stomach Interstate 35 as my first ride on the hog.

Our plan all along was to buy the Harley and then we'd take turns riding the Harley and the Kawasaki. That lasted one weekend... we took a weekend jaunt around the countryside with Ronney, Annette, and Paul, and poor Dawn was on the Kawaski, knees above her chin, buzzing along behind us trying to keep up. Egads. We realized NO ONE wanted to ride the Kaw.

So with Ronney's help, we sold the Kawasaki and started looking around for motorcycles for sale. We knew we couldn't afford a second new bike so we were looking at used ones and couldn't find any reasonable prices anywhere. So... I decided to turn to E-Bay. Now mind you I have never bought or sold a thing on e-bay before... not a thing. Just never did manage to get on and do that.

I settled pretty quickly on wanting a Honda Shadow A.C.E. (American Classic Edition) because I had heard lots of good things about them and we both liked their looks. I found several on e-bay and joined in the auctions on a number of them but would get beaten out at the last second every time.

Finally, we found one in St. Louis with a "buy now" price and I just did it. For various reasons, we ended up leaving Dallas that afternoon, grabbing Ronney's trailer, and driving to St. Louis overnight, arriving at 6:00 am to meet the guy, check out the bike, make arrangements at the bank to pay off his lien, and then trailer it back home. I will save the tale of loading the bike for another day, but suffice it to say if we'd had cameras rolling we'd all be rich now. However, I am proud to say that my very first transaction on e-bay was a doozy, buying a bike. We turned around and sold my Jeep Hard Top and a number of other things on e-bay and paid for the bike with "stuff laying around" the house. It may have all happened spontaneously, but they are two purchases we're very happy we made as we're enjoying riding a great deal. We both drive to work on the bikes almost every day and save gas, and we've taken some trips to Houston and Oklahoma.

These are shots of us with the new Honda at the Johnson's house after driving in from St. Louis.
