Women's WorthThis is another slightly outdated rant, but judging from the commentary it received, still interesting to some folks. And, hey, now that Michael Irvin's gone from the Cowboys, there's still other players on that team and others who are doing the same sort of thing... so extrapolate and stretch your mind for this particular topic: About two years ago, the media was in an uproar over allegations against Michael Irvin and Erik Williams, two members of the Dallas Cowboys. No, I'm not going to rant about the Cowboys. And yes, I know that the charges have been dropped. What really gets my goat is the way the players' accuser was treated by the media. "The complainant, an exotic dancer..." as if somehow that negates whatever she might say. Media statements have included such gems as defense attorneys stating that she wasn't credible because "she was an exotic dancer." I first wonder why it's even considered to be relevant information. But more than that... Hmmm... I've been to a couple of so-called gentlemen's clubs before (truly a contradiction in terms), in my wilder former days. Why is it okay for men to frequent a club with "exotic dancers," why is there no shame associated with the men who spend their entire evening wandering from one sleazy club to another on Harry Hines or Northwest Highway here in Dallas, some of the rankest real estate anywhere? Why is there no shame with the men surfing pornography and sex videos of whatever sort on the Web? But a woman who worked there, or starred in the video, is no longer reputable. When's the last time you heard a male defendant reviled, and his testimony belittled, because "he frequents exotic dance halls" or has been seen in the company of dancers? When are we going to report men's habituation of such "dens of ill repute" as we do the women who make a very hard living there?
