Someone Protect
Me From Myself!
Well, this rant is a bit dated because of its focus on the "Ellen"
TV show, but the subject matter is still relevant -- why do some
folks scream so loudly for "them" to protect them from
what they might see?
During the Ellen TV show "coming out" (or "puppy")
episode, I was fascinated with the response from some members of
the so-called "Moral Majority", aka stuck-up self-righteous busy
bodies.
What are they afraid of? These are
some examples of the calibre of their protests.
- "Thanks for not showing that filth...
I have a one-year-old son to protect!"
- Yeah, right... like Junior is going
to crawl over to that remote and turn the show on. And gee, there's
a lot more 'filth' on 90% of the shows than there is on Ellen,
one of the most benign shows on television.
- "We're glad you didn't advertise
on that show... we don't like to watch it!"
- Here's a clue... then don't.
Maybe they're not aware that they can just turn off the
damned television?
- "Why do they want to cram their
lifestyles down our throats?"
- Oh, like straight people don't
cram lifestyles down everyone else's throats? gimme a break!
If you didn't watch the show, that's fine -- it had a 45 Nielsen
share rating, or about 36 million viewers, so obviously Pat Buchanan's
minions were not missed too much, ya know? So just turn off
the dial, or pop in a cassette of your favorite preacher and feel
all warm, fuzzy and self-righteous, but let the rest
of us make up our minds on what we want to see!
