Panel Piece Descriptions

Most of these panel pieces were presented at the Market Hall display at the end of 1994.

Stonewall Group of NA

This Quilt piece represents the members of Stonewall NA Group who died (clean) from AIDS since the club was formed in 1983. After I had sewed together the brick pattern, we hung it on the club wall and all took turns painting the names on.

Tim B.    John C.    Angel de S.    Ed T.    Steve R.    Michael F.    Mike H.    Chris S.    John H.    David G.    Stephen F.    Michael R.    Bill W.    Emerson

The back of the Stonewall quilt was covered with messages written by all the members in memory of those we'd lost.

The Quilt at the NAMES Quilt Workshop, where I sewed on the backing and turned it in. If you know how to sew, and you'd like to do some really meaningful volunteer work, just go hang out at a NAMES Project workshop in your community and meet all the people who are bringing in bits of their loved ones. It will change your life.

The Quilt piece is hanging at Market Hall in Dallas for display during the presentation ceremonies.

John R. Hannan

Born July 21, 1952, died November 3, 1992

I wish I had a recording of John's laugh to play over his quilt piece. That, to me, sums up my dearest friend John. He had a laugh that was unique -- his entire body shook, he turned deep red, and he just roared. He loved to laugh, and we used to spend lots of time finding bizarre things to laugh about. After John died, his sisters and I had a laugh about how John had persevered to the end, in that he'd kept his (quite conservative) mother out of the voting polls and unable to vote for George Bush against Bill Clinton!

July 1992: This is Stephen, Bobby, me, and Judy all dressed up as old coots for John's 40th birthday party. We found this AWFUL photograph of John, with his face all pinched up like a prune (or, if you'll excuse the scatalogical allusion, as if he needed a prune or two). A quick trip to Kinko's for some color copies, then we made some masks out of the photos, and dressed up like old farts for his party. He thought it was a scream.

I haven't scanned this in yet, but this is something that John was quite rightly proud about. John gave a speech to the National Commission on AIDS in 1990. And, in fact, a quote from his presentation was used on the cover of the Commission's report, America Living With AIDS.

Today, I ask that this Commission take back to Washington and to the President my voice of hope for the future and discontent with the past.

John Hannan, July 1990

John once told me, early in 1992, about how he considered AIDS to have been a blessing in his life. It allowed him to reach beyond himself, to do things to help others such as speaking to the AIDS Commission, and to start up P.A.R. (Persons with AIDS in Recovery), a recovery group which is still going strong today and helping addicts struggling with both diseases.

John used to make the most wonderful bizarrely colored wooden snakes, so that was my inspiration for his quilt piece.

Another view of the quilt, hanging up at Market Hall.

Ed Tindall

Ed Tindall's quilt piece -- this type of starched crisp plaid shirt was his typical costume. Ed was the most squeakiest-clean guy I ever knew.

The panel piece that Sue (Stephen's mom) made; Judy, Bobby, and Sue are looking at it at the NAMES Project Workshop.
You can see a photograph of cute little Stephen on this portion of the panel his mom made.

Michael Frank

Michael Frank's Quilt. Michael was really into fantasy and role playing stuff. He helped me get my motorcycle driving license (taking me to the exam site), and was a good friend.
