We planned to drive from Flagstaff to Phoenix today, stopping at Sedona to see the wonderful red rocks. The weather had other ideas. We awoke to find about four inches of snow on the ground, with snow continuing to fall. The drive was a bit nerve-racking. We came upon the scene of a van flipping over, and an 18-wheeler skewed into the median, soon after it happened. |

The road wa slick and icy the whole way. I drove in four-wheel drive about 30mph the entire time. We attempted to reach Sedona from the north, but turned back as the road was far too slick. |

After driving south to Phoenix, we decided to attempt the southern entrance to Sedona, and found it still clear for a brief time. We did a bit of shopping in the town for silver and turquoise jewelry. I'm happy to say the trip was a success; I have a wonderful turquoise bracelet for a souvenir. |

It wasn't long before the the wonderful red rocks were covered by the low-hanging clouds and arriving snow flurries. |

Once in Phoenix, we found our Motel 6, again, and the light was left on
for us as promised. On a previous visit to Phoenix, long ago when I
worked for the IRS, some local
workers had taken me to Ed Debevic's Diner for dinner. I had raved to
Judy about it enough so that she remembered it and wanted us to
go, but I couldn't remember the place myself.
Well, Ed's is fun. It's a 50's style diner, and all the waitpersons are dressed 'in character'. But they're also intentionally rude to you -- one waitress went off on us because we came in the wrong door. It was fun, but the kids just didn't get it, kept wondering why they were yelling at us. The waitstaff all get up on tables and dance to certain songs, they serve the most awesomely delicious fries and shakes, and it was a lively last night on the road. | |
