Remodeling, 2006Here are some images of our remodeling work on the formerly-named "slanty room". This is a room in our house, on the second floor in the back, that was originally an old external porch. The previous owners had it framed in but left the original porch flooring -- tongue-in-groove, slanted to allow run-off -- which they eventually covered with blue carpet and pink walls (don't ask). We decided finally to level out the 5 inches over eight feet width slant, which was a rather complicated project. We built a graduated floor base from 2x4s salvaged from the bedroom wall we knocked out last year, coupled with scrap shingles from the Habitat for Humanity outlet store here in Dallas, topped with 3/4-inch plywood. For flooring sub-base we used IceGuard rubberized sheeting (roofing) and topped it with a nice old-looking wood laminate (also all from Habitat for Humanity). The entire project was completed in a fraction of the cost that it would have taken if we had contracted it out, and about 25% of the cost of materials from a regular hardware store. Thanks, Habitat! This room is now designated as Dawn's craft room, for use in scrapbooking and stamping, and occasional sewing by me. It's a lovely room to reclaim from its former use as more of a clutter storage shed! |
